Enhancing Relationships

Love doesn’t just sit there, like a stone, it has to be made, like bread; remade all the time, made new.

Enhance Your Relationship & Keep It Strong Down The Road:  More On Couples Work

Couples therapy isn't just for married couples or couples facing divorce.  Some couples may not be experiencing significant conflicts, but see counseling either in preparation for marriage, starting a family, or to focus on relationship enrichment. Therapy can help you build a solid foundation for your relationship and create a more fulfilling connection with your partner.

Couples therapy involves identifying sources of dissatisfaction and distress in a relationship, such as conflict, poor communication, shifts in hopes and dreams, and major life changes. The focus of couples work is to develop goals and implement a plan designed to alleviate these issues and restore balance and intimacy to the relationship.

Couples therapy helps couples understand and resolve conflicts and improve their relationship. It gives couples the tools to communicate better, negotiate differences, problem solve, and even argue in a healthier way. Illness, infidelity, sex, stress, anger, job stress, finances, children, family, and communication problems can contribute to distress in couples relationships. Couples therapy can help resolve conflicts and heal wounds. I am facilitator in the process of examining and fostering a shift in the patterns many couples fall into. In couples therapy, I provide exercises between sessions for the couple to reinforce what they are learning about one another and begin to relate to each other in a new way. Couples therapy can help you understand your relationship better and make well-thought-out-decisions.

My goal is to assist you in moving away from repeated maladaptive patterns of behavior to utilizing a real dialogue that addresses your true needs, hope, dreams, and wishes.  The goal isn't to eliminate fighting, fights are natural and normal and happen in the healthiest relationships, the goal is to learn how to quickly, and effectively, move into repair mode; to identify and examine what went wrong and to talk it over with your partner without returning to fight mode.

When working with couples, I utilize the Gottman method in addition to my primary Cognitive Behavioral Therapy approach. These approaches enable clients to gain greater self-awareness and the ability to incorporate skills learned in therapy into everyday life. These interventions teach couples to create desired changes in a loving and supportive manner. I help couples learn how to identify and communicate unmet needs and develop solutions that are meaningful for each individual couple. In couples therapy I assist you in listening patiently to your partners experience and to articulate and take accountability of your own experience, moving away from blame. The goal of couples work is to learn how to communicate more openly, to hear and understand each other in a healthy and new way, maintain awareness of the impact of your actions on your partner, understand what changes are possible, how these changes can be realized, and what is not possible within the relationship.
