Couples Therapy: Relationship Wellness

Courageous & Therapeutic Conversations

The effectiveness of couples therapy is directly related to the motivation level of both partners and timing. Research shows that a couple waits, on average, 6 years before seeking help. That's 6 years to build up resentment before they begin the important work of learning to resolve differences in effective ways. So many couples come to therapy way beyond their due date.  The longer a couple delays entering therapy to address concerns, the more challenging the work.  Prevention is 3 times more effective than intervention.

The challenges we face inside our relationships help us confront things about ourselves. Many people don't realize how much we need to grow inside of relationships and how intimacy itself is challenging.  The test of the relationship is how capable you are in working through those challenges. As a therapist I see loneliness in the presence of another, lack of any physical touch, despair, contempt, and entrenched patterns of relating that keep a couple stuck or unravels them.

I know how overwhelming and painful communication, and other challenges that emerge in intimate relationships, can be. I also know the potential for change, growth, and connection that is possible in working through these challenges with support. I enjoy helping couples connect in new ways by teaching an alternative language that then shapes an alternative experience . Who we become by virtue of who we are with. How the relationship creates us and how we create it.

I help couples understand and resolve conflicts, improve their relationship satisfaction, and move beyond impasses. I tailor therapy to meet your unique needs, and utilize various evidence based treatment approaches, including the well researched Gottman Method for couples counseling, as well as integrate other well established and respected therapeutic approaches to couples therapy. Therapy gives couples the tools to communicate better, negotiate differences, problem solve, and even argue in a healthier way to alleviate issues and restore balance and intimacy to the relationship. Couples therapy can help you build a solid foundation for your relationship and create a more fulfilling connection with your partner.

When working with couples , I use a dual perspective, meaning both partners point-of-view is valid, heard, and understood; helping people see the wisdom of both sides.  Much of my work is about providing structure and a safe space to have difficult conversations. Seeing problems in context, I help my clients see their dominate and prevailing coping strategies that often exacerbate the issues.

Therapy will help you and your partner transform defensiveness into curiosity, and turn isolation into openness, connection, and intimacy. You will learn how to turn criticism into requests, frustrations into feedback, and learn how to be open and vulnerable with each other. You will learn skills proven to restore and strengthen relationships.

My work is a blend of: process, psychoeducation, skills, and exercises. My style is marked by humor, directness, and empathy. I see my role as a mediator between a couple’s competing narratives.
