The intake session is a standard appointment when starting therapy or resuming therapy after a considerable time has passed. Conducting a thorough intake allows me to become better acquainted with your personal history and the reasons you are seeking counseling. We will also complete the Informed Consent Form, which outlines your rights as a client, and Client Information Form.  These documents are standard professional counseling procedure.  The intake is mainly about information gathering, getting to know each other, and will last approximately 90 minutes.  During this time we will cover topics such as:

  • Family history

  • Your present concern(s)

  • Prior experiences you have had in therapy

  • Medical issues which may impact your emotional well-being

  • Relationships

  • Substance use

I also ask about your schedule, interest, and background so I can get a sense of what your life looks like. We discuss:

  • Any challenges you're currently having

  • When the issue(s) started

  • How they affect your life

  • Any contributing factors you can identify

Finally, we go over your goals for therapy and discuss what you hope to achieve in counseling. I give you some input about how we could move forward together. At the end of our first session, we will decide whether or not to meet again.  I provide therapy for a variety of issues; however, I am also happy to make a referral to another provider if we believe it is in your best interest.
